The Connection between Zoloft and Insomnia

from:

Insomnia is a sleeping disorder in which the sufferer has trouble falling asleep, staying asleep, or both. In any case, the person ends up feeling extremely tired or exhausted the next day, and poor sleep for any length of time can result in rather serious consequences. These could include mood disturbances, lack of motivation, decreased attention span, and low levels of energy.

There are actually three different types of insomnia, which are: mild insomnia, moderate insomnia, and severe insomnia. The first involves sleeping difficulties that only last for a few days, moderate insomnia involves sleep difficulties that last for less than a month and which mildly affect regular functioning during the day. While severe insomnia involves sleep difficulties that last for more than a month and which seriously impair functioning during the day.

Zoloft and Insomnia

There are quite a few different known causes of insomnia, but one of the least known and understood is the one involving Zoloft and insomnia. The relationship between Zoloft and insomnia is one that is important to learn about, especially considering the large number of people that are taking Zoloft on a regular basis.

Zoloft is an FDA-approved medication that is used to treat depression, social anxiety disorder, panic disorder, and obsessive compulsive disorder. There are however certain side effects that are commonly experienced by users of this drug, and one of the most commonly experienced of all, is insomnia.

Zoloft and insomnia are known for relating to each other because insomnia is a very common Zoloft side effect. In fact, certain clinical trials of the drug showed that insomnia was revealed in nearly 29 per cent of people taking the medication. The relationship between Zoloft and insomnia was noted to be even more pronounced for those individuals who were taking the medication for their obsessive compulsive disorder.

Although preventing insomnia altogether while taking Zoloft is basically impossible, there are certain things that you can do in order to try and improve the condition, and this includes: not taking any naps in the afternoon or close to your bedtime, staying away from nicotine and caffeine before bed, maintaining regular exercise, and adopting a pre-sleep ritual such as reading or a warm bath.

Zoloft is not all bad, and is very successful in the treating of insomnia as well as an array of other medical conditions. However there are possible side effects that you may end up experiencing from it and so you need to be aware of this and discuss it with your health care professional before you begin taking the drug.
